FOKAL

FOKAL: Created in 1995, the Fondation Connaissance et Liberté / Fondasyon Konesans Ak Libète (Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty), is a well recognized national foundation supported mainly by Open Society Foundations, OSF, a world wide network of foundations and initiatives created by philanthropist George Soros for the promotion of democratic values. FOKAL also receives support from the European Union and the French cooperation. The Foundation offers to local communities throughout the country and to organizations of civil society a large spectrum of activities in the fields of education, arts and culture and development.

FOKAL has chosen to target populations that are most apt to become agents for change in Haitian society: children and youth, civil society and grassroots associations, and historically marginalized sectors such as peasants and women.

  • Promote the structures necessary for the establishment of a just and durable democratic society, based on individual and collective autonomy and responsibility;
  • Support the autonomy of individuals by fostering critical thinking, clear judgment, accountability, creativity and free cooperation through         education, training and communication;
  • Reinforce the organizational processes which promote within groups the capacity to acquire, share and compare knowledge and know-how for an active participation in the administration of public affairs and the full development of social, cultural and community life.

Friends of FOKAL, formerly a Tides Center Project, is the US fundraising arm of FOKAL. It provides the structure necessary to seek funding in the U.S. With its 501(c)(3) status, it can accept contributions that are fully tax deductible.
