Presentation of the Guillaume Coadou's film Ginen


Nadine Montreville, Haitian, 40 year old, sings at home accompanied with a « tchatcha » (maracas). Two friends accompany her in her invocations to “Ogou”, “Zaka”, “Gede”,…
It was in august 2004 in Delmas (suburbs of Port-au-Prince).
Marceline Bikoko, 30 year old, from Cameroun, is an Assiko dancer (Bassa). With the help of Robert Ngwe, choreographer, they have established choreographies according to the songs dedicated to “Ginen”.
It was in December 2004.

Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase

This first Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase has for objective to present films from Antigua-and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Curaçao, Haïti, Cayman Island, Jamaica, Martinique, the Dominican Republic, Saint-Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago. A serie of films will be presented during 10 days at two locations FOKAL (143 avenue Christophe 4pm and Institut français (avenue Lamartinière, 6pm).

Book signing of Ida by Guy Régis Jr (Baka Ròklò)

Ida Monologue déchet, the first book by de Guy Jr. Régis, Haitian theater’s young rebel is published by Rivarti Collection, NY. Described as « a country torn by words » by Syto Cavé, Ida will be signed and sold at the promotionnal price of 400 gourdes during two days, Friday May 4th at FOKAL’s Café and Saturday May 5th at the Bookstore La Pléiade, Bois Patate.

One Hundred Year Birth Anniversary of Haitian Writer Jacques Roumain (1907 – 1944) at the libraries supported by FOKAL including the Monique Calixte who will celebrate this haitian writer poet activist whose novel : Gouverneurs de la Rosee has received universal praise. This month is scheduled poetic collage by Nous théâtre Association.

Concert by the german group Fraunhofer Saitenmusik

he German Embassy hosts this unique concert that will take place exceptionally on Sunday May 13th at 5pm. This group of three musicians (Heidi Zink, Gerhard Zink, Richard Kurländer ) from Munich will be shortly staying in Haiti. Created 29 years ago this group find its inspiration in traditional and classical sources. Cord instruments will be played acoustically in the FOKAL-UNESCO Hall

Theater« Ces mots du corps » by Paula Clermont Péan

« Battered women, thrown like objects in a cell, dream of freedom ». This play has been presented three times at the CulturElles Festival organized by the French Institutes in Port-au-Prince and the Alliances Francaises. The conception and direction is by Paula Clermont Pean with comedians by the Troupe Actelié. There is also a dance choreographed by Jeanguy Saintus interpreted by Linda Isabelle François from Ayikodans.

Michel–Philippe Lerebours presents his latest book livre « L’habitation sucrière Saint Dominguoise, vestiges d’habitations sucrières de la région de Port-au-Prince published by the Presses Nationales in the collection « Mémoire vivante » The author will sign the book then will host a conference with several specialist about this issue.

Ciné Canada – Edition 2007

As in 2006, FOKAL will be host of the Canadian film festival. There will five films presented : Les îles ont une âme (26 février), l’audition (26 février), un dimanche à Kigali (27 février), Jésus de Montréal (1er mars), l’Horloge (2 mars). All of these films are recent and have received critical acclaim. Other movies will be presented on the Champs de Mars as well as at the Rex theater

Concert de Toto B – Rara F

Rara F. is a rara consisting of women by the theatral group Toto directed by Dieuvela Etienne. Already presented at the Festival Culture Elle organized by the French Institute in april 2006, the rara F this year will not go out in the street this time but stay in the FOKAL-UNESCO hall.

Music seminar and Concert by Mike Coriolan

Mike Corialan will come from Canada for the Francophonie events. He will host a two day music seminar that will end with a concert. Mike Coriolan is a young music writer and singer that creates an inventive music. He teaches music writing and helps young artists develop their talents.

Fabienne Denis presents her first music CD Rele Lwa with Aizan Voix et Tambours on Saturday February 3rd from 10am till 4pm. The CD will be sold at 400 gdes. Activities for Gabriela Mistral (1888-1957)

The Embassy of Chile in Haiti, the French Institute and FOKAL invite you to a series of activities honoring Gabriela Mistral, writer, teacher and activist. She is the first woman from Latin America to receive the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1945. Mr Luis Dionoso del Rio and Mrs Evelin Gonzalez will animate activities starting with the inauguration of the exhibit, Tuesday January 16th at 4pm .

Exhibit - Retrospective

Jean Menard Derenoncourt will present at FOKAL a retrospective of his paintings, from his first landscapes in 1974 to his last colossal painting representing all of Haiti's presidents from 1801 to 2006. About 30 paintings will be exhibited.

Michèle Oriol is a well-known scholar in Sociology, and worked ont land ownership in Haiti. Debate Program training video

Thanks to a grant from the European Union, the Debate program just started working on a training video for the different debate clubs. Most of the filming took place at the FOKAL-UNESCO hall under the direction of Michele Lemoine. Themes divided in training modules: the game, cross examination, judging, argumentation, how to run a club.
