Presentation of the Guillaume Coadou's film Ginen

Nadine Montreville, Haitian, 40 year old, sings at home accompanied with a « tchatcha » (maracas). Two friends accompany her in her invocations to “Ogou”, “Zaka”, “Gede”,…
It was in august 2004 in Delmas (suburbs of Port-au-Prince).
Marceline Bikoko, 30 year old, from Cameroun, is an Assiko dancer (Bassa). With the help of Robert Ngwe, choreographer, they have established choreographies according to the songs dedicated to “Ginen”.
It was in December 2004.

Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase
Place: Fokal, Institut Francais
Date: May 3 - 11 mai 2007

This first Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase has for objective to present films from Antigua-and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Curaçao, Haïti, Cayman Island, Jamaica, Martinique, the Dominican Republic, Saint-Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago. A serie of films will be presented during 10 days at two locations FOKAL (143 avenue Christophe 4pm and Institut français (avenue Lamartinière, 6pm).

Homage to Jacques Roumain by Nous Théatre Ass.
Place: Salle FOKAL-UNESCO
Date: Saturday May 12th 4 pm

One Hundred Year Birth Anniversary of Haitian Writer Jacques Roumain (1907 – 1944) at the libraries supported by FOKAL including the Monique Calixte who will celebrate this haitian writer poet activist whose novel : Gouverneurs de la Rosee has received universal praise. This month is scheduled poetic collage by Nous théâtre Association.

Concert by the german group Fraunhofer Saitenmusik
Place: Fokal-Unesco Hall
Date: may 13th, 2007

The German Embassy hosts this unique concert that will take place exceptionally on Sunday May 13th at 5pm. This group of three musicians (Heidi Zink, Gerhard Zink, Richard Kurländer ) from Munich will be shortly staying in Haiti. Created 29 years ago this group find its inspiration in traditional and classical sources. Cord instruments will be played acoustically in the FOKAL-UNESCO Hall.

Month of documentary

The French Institute, Mwem and FOKAL invite you to the month of documentaries. We will offer a serie of non-fiction films about Haiti in 3 different locations and at 3 different days : wednesdays at FOKAL (143 avenue Christophe 4pmThursdays at the French Institute (99 avenue Lamartinière, 6pm) et Fridays at Mwem (43 rue Magny Petion-ville 6h30 pm). Ciné Canada – Edition 2007
Place: FOKAL-UNESCO Hall
Date: 26, 27 Feb 2007, 1st and 2nd March, 2007 4pm

As in 2006, FOKAL will be host of the Canadian film festival. There will five films presented : Les îles ont une âme (26 février), l’audition (26 février), un dimanche à Kigali (27 février), Jésus de Montréal (1er mars), l’Horloge (2 mars). All of these films are recent and have received critical acclaim. Other movies will be presented on the Champs de Mars as well as at the Rex theater.

Fabienne Denis presents her first music CD Rele Lwa with Aizan Voix et Tambours on Saturday February 3rd from 10am till 4pm. The CD will be sold at 400 gdes. Then at 6pm the artist will perform in a concert at FOKAL- UNESCO hall. Dancers and musicians will also participate in this promotional concert. Free Concert

Activites autour de Gabriela Mistral 1888-1957

Date: 16 to 20 january 07

The Embassy of Chile in Haiti, the French Institute and FOKAL invite you to a series of activities honoring Gabriela Mistral, writer, teacher and activist. She is the first woman from Latin America to receive the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1945. Mr Luis Dionoso del Rio and Mrs Evelin Gonzalez will animate activities starting with the inauguration of the exhibit, Tuesday January 16th at 4pm .

Music CD signing sale by Robinson Auguste

La Fondation Connaissance et Liberté is very pleased to invite you to this play by Nous Théâtre Association selected during the last Edition of the Quatre Chemins Theater Festival. Exceptionnally it will take place at the Auditorium l’auditorium des Sœurs de Sainte Rose de Lima in Lalue,. The Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Presses Nationales d’Haiti and the Service de Coopération de l’Ambassade de France also partly contributed to this activity.

Exhibit - Retrospective
Jean Menard Derenoncourt will present at FOKAL a retrospective of his paintings, from his first landscapes in 1974 to his last colossal painting representing all of Haiti's presidents from 1801 to 2006. About 30 paintings will be exhibited.

Conference by Michèle Oriol
Jean-Jacques Dessalines, historical personality and Issue for memory
Michèle Oriol is a well-known scholar in Sociology, and worked ont land ownership in Haiti. She also published the " dictionnaire de la Révolution Haitienne " and the " Manuel d'Histoire et de Civisme " that offer new perspectives in the field of history in Haiti particularly during the revolutionary era. . .

Debate Program training video
Thanks to a grant from the European Union, the Debate program just started working on a training video for the different debate clubs. Most of the filming took place at the FOKAL-UNESCO hall under the direction of Michele Lemoine. Themes divided in training modules: the game, cross examination, judging, argumentation, how to run a club.

Drawing exhibit and Movies from Inuit artists of Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canadá.
Inuit is a general term for a group of culturally similar indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic coasts of Siberia, Alaska, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Labrador and Greenland. Until fairly recent times, there has been a remarkable homogeneity in the culture throughout this area, which traditionally relied on fish, sea mammals, and land animals for food, heat, light, clothing, tools, and shelter. Their language is Inuktitut. (wikepedia)

In memory of the poet Jacques Roche.

The centre Culturel Pyepoudre presents Le premier poète from Jack London. This story has been adapted into a play and directed by Paula Clermont Péan. It will be interpreted by the theater group Actelié. It will be also the occasion to celebrate the anniversary of the Pyepoudre Cultural Center.

Visit by Georges Soros and Hillary Clinton to a school for the FOKAL’s TiPa TiPa program.

On the 21st and 22nd November 1998 Georges Soros, the founder of the Open Society Institute accompanied by the then First Lady of the United States, Mrs Hillary Clinton paid a short visit to Haiti.

The purpose of the visit was primarily to see schools involved in the Tipa Tipa program in Port-au-Prince and Pandiassou (in the Plateau Central).
